Welcome to the March issue of Understanding the Basics of Computers. We have new pages coming out every week and the video tutorials are taking off as well. . I hope the articles I have chosen in this issue help you with your computer problems or teach you something you didn't know before.

Excel Templates

Creating projects in Excel can be very time consuming. I have found a great web site that will help you with the initial work of creating your spreadsheet. Click on this link In the right hand side of the webpage there is a list of template categories. Either click on a category you wish to look at or click the bottom link titled More Categories. This will bring to you a longer list with subcategories.

Browse through the template links and find one you would like to try. The list of templates are not just Excel templates. There are templates for all of the Microsoft Office Suite. Click on the download button and it will ask you to agree to Microsoft's service agreement. If the template does not automatically download click either the active X bar at the top of your web browser or the download link in the body of the page.

A window will open asking if you would like to open or save the file. Open the file in Excel. This will allow you to edit the file then save it with your changes.

Format Photos in Word 2007

Inserting photos into at Word document can add a lot of style and personalization to your project. Begin by clicking on the Insert tab and click Pictures in the Illustrations section of the Insert tab.

Browse to the photo you would like to insert. Click on the Insert button.

Once the photo is inserted into your Word 2007 document the picture tools format tab will be available.

In this tab you have the option to adjust the brightness, color, and more. The next section is adjust. This is one of my favorite sections you can change the shape and boarder of the picture.

Arrange lets you set the picture where you want on the page. For example you can set it in front of the text, behind the text, or choose the location on the page. You are also able to rotate the picture in this section.

The last section is size. You can crop your picture down to focus on one section of the picture, or enter a new height and width for your picture.

Play with all of these options. It is a lot of fun to include photos into your documents.

Create an email rule in Outlook 2007

I use rules in Outlook all of the time. It makes it so easy to sort and find emails quickly. Rules can make it so emails automatically get sorted into categories, folders, play sounds, automatically delete, and more.

Click on tools and select rules and alerts. This will open the Rules window. Click the New rule button. Click the type of rule you would like to create and click next. Follow the wizard inserting all of the categories and information. There are a lot of choices in each section of the wizard.
